HIDALGO, 3 March. - The 2013 girls soccer season looked pretty bleak for Valley View back in January. A little more than a month later, the Lady Tigers claimed their third consecutive District 63-4A title, and first under first-year head coach Juan Trevi;o, after defeating Edcouch-Elsa 3-0 Friday at Tiger Stadium.

"It’s fabulous," said Lady Tigers head coach Juan Treviño. "It’s even better that the girls are playing well, and I even have three starters injured and one was suspended for this game."

Lizette Ramos opened up the scoring for Valley View in the second minute of the game. Ashley Garza added a goal before halftime and Zaide García closed out the scoring with a tally in the second half.

Another key injury to the Lady Tigers was to their starting goalkeeper and head coach Treviño had to improvise a backup netminder for the past three matches.

The Lady Tigers started out the season with several losses, mainly to 5A squads, according to coach Treviño, who also said that was part of their strategy to be ready for their district season.

"We went from the bottom to the top," said Treviño. "We started losing almost all our games, but that experience helped us to start winning against teams that are at our level. It benefits us to play against stronger teams early on and then take on teams from our district, and that helped us get the results we wanted, thank God."

Valley View won district titles in 2011 and 2012 after 9-0-1 (27 points) and 12-0-0 (36) seasons, respectively. The Lady Tigers are currently undefeated with a 7-0 record and 19 points, six points ahead of their closest district rivals Hidalgo (5-2, 13) and Mercedes (4-3, 13).

The Lady Tigers will look to finish out the regular season undefeated for the second year in a row when they visit Hidalgo in the Clásico on March 8 at Hidalgo’s Bill Pate Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

"That’s our next goal, to finish undefeated," said Treviño. "It’s going to be a good game. We’re going to finish the district season almost two weeks before playoffs start, but we have a few non-district games scheduled to keep us in shape."
