EDINBURG, 10 Feb. - The Lady Jaguars overcame a tough first half and forward Diana Covarrubias scored two goals Friday to lead Edinburg Economedes to a 3-0 home victory over La Joya Juárez-Lincoln.
Economedes improved to 4-1 with 12 points and took over second place in District 30-5A. Juárez-Lincoln dropped to 4-2 with 12 points and trail behind the Lady Jags on goal differential.
The aggressive Lady Huskies put the pressure on Economedes’ defense early on. The Juárez-Lincoln attackers got through the home side’s defense on several occasions in the first half, but were unable to come up with a goal.
Instead, on a first half counterattack, Economedes striker Diana Covarrubias received a pass from the backfield with no one in front of her except the goalkeeper. Covarrubias beat a defender on the pass and sprinted to the goal area, where she unloaded a shot past the Juárez-Lincoln keeper to give the Lady Jags a 1-0 first-half lead.
Covarrubias added a second goal in the second half along with Jasmine Garza’s tally to give Economedes a 3-0 victory over the Lady Huskies.
In other 30-5A matches Friday, Sharyland defeated Donna 4-1 on a pair of strikes by Clowyie Flores, a goal by Mikaela Garvin, and a score by Kassy De la Garza.
The Lady Rattlers remained in first place and undefeated in district play with the victory, and improved to 5-0 with 15 points. The loss dropped the Bravettes to 3-2 with 10 points, and are currently in fourth place, behind Juárez-Lincoln.
