LAREDO, 17 Jan. - In a tournament marred by forfeits and a lack of information, Sharyland walked away with its sixth consecutive Border Olympics title on Jan. 12 and ninth trophy overall in the 10th year of the competition’s existence.
The Lady Rattlers defeated a surprising Edinburg Economedes squad 3-0 in an all-Valley championship match. Economedes upset Laredo United 2-1 in the semifinals to advance to the title game against Sharyland.
"We had a good game plan and started off strong," said Sharyland head coach J.J. López. "I was impressed with a lot of our new players and we got some continuity going in our lineup. We’re getting comfortable with who our starting 11 are going to be."
After getting a free ticket to the second round of the tournament courtesy of a 1-0 forfeit win over Medina, Sharyland let loose with a 6-0 rout of Uvalde.
The Lady Rattlers edged out Laredo Cigarroa 1-0 to advance to the semifinals, where they knocked off Laredo Nixon 4-0 to qualify to their 10th straight Border Olympics championship match.
Economedes opened the competition with a 2-1 victory over Laredo LBJ and followed with a 3-0 shutout of Laredo Martin.
In the quarterfinals, the Lady Jaguars defeated city rival Edinburg North 4-1 to advance to the semifinals against favored Laredo United.
