McALLEN, 24 Oct. - The Lady Rattlers and Lady Cougars combined to score five goals in the first 21 minutes of their Week 6 South Texas Premier Soccer Association 18-and-Under Girls Fall League match up before the defense took over and the Rattlers walked away with a 4-1 victory.
The Lady Rattlers went up 3-0 in the opening eight minutes of the key match up on a pair of tallies by Clowyie Flores (3’ and 7’) and one goal by Daniela Cantú (8’). The Lady Cougars reacted seven minutes later to cut the early deficit to 3-1 on a 15th minute strike from María Mata.
Cantú, the STXPSA Fall League’s leading goal scorer, struck a second time in the 21st to increase the Rattlers lead to 4-1, which turned out to be the final score of the game.
After the first five goals were scored, both squads showed that they know how to play defense too and went on to play 69 minutes of shutout ball. However, in the case of the Lady Coogs, they couldn’t generate enough offense to rally and offset the early scoring.
With the win, the Lady Rattlers remained undefeated and improved their record to 6-0-0 with18 points, and got a firmer grip on the first-place spot of the STXPSA Girls Fall League.
In another Week 6 match up, the Lady Bulldogs found a way to edge past the Sabercats 1-0 when Marbella Cabrera scored the lone goal of the game in the 28th minute, which proved to be the game winner.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 3-2-1 and 11 points with the win, and combined with the Cougars’ loss, the canine squad reclaimed the second place spot they gave up last week.
Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles and Warriors played to a hard-fought 1-all draw to close out the sixth week of play of the Fall League.
Genevieve Mejía put the Warriors on top 1-0 in the 12the minute, and it looked as though they were going to notch their first victory of the season when the Eagles’ Ruby Rivas swooped in to equalize the game and split the points with the Warriors.
The Lady Eagles improved to 1-2-3 with five points, while the Warriors’ accumulated a 0-2-4 record with two points.
Cantú’s two goals for the Lady Rattlers left her as the absolute goal-scoring leader of the STXPSA Girls 18-and-Under Fall League with 10 goals in six weeks of play.
Week 7 matches: Lady Sabercats vs. Lady Warriors, 9 a.m.; Lady Bulldogs vs. Lady Cougars, 10:45 a.m.; Lady Rattlers vs. Lady Eagles, 12:30 p.m.
