Girls Fall League reaches halfway point of season

McALLEN, 17 Oct. - A pair of goles in two minutes was all the scoring the Lady Rattlers needed to defeat the Lady Bulldogs 2-0 in their much-anticipated Week 5 South Texas Premier Soccer Association’s 18-and-Under Fall League match up.

Daniela Pinto opened the scoring in the 13th minute and Miriam Garza scored the eventual game-winner in the 15th minute of play to give the Lady Rattlers their fifth straight Fall League victory.

With the win, the Lady Rattlers improved to 5-0-0 with 15 points to remain undefeated and atop the STXPSA Fall League standings. Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs fell to 2-2-1 with eight points on the season and third place.

In another match up, the Lady Cougars defeated the Warriors 6-0 to take over the second-place position in the table with 10 points and a 3-1-1 mark.

Luisa Montes de Oca put the Lady Coogs up 1-nil in the 20th minute and María Mata increased the feline advantage 2-0 at the 29’ mark.

In the second half, Cindy Reséndiz made it 3-0 in the 46th and seven minutes later Reyna Morales added the Coogs’ fourth tally of the day.

The Lady Cougars didn’t give the Warriors time to react. Noemi Rivas scored in the 56th to make it 5-0 and Gloria Gutiérrez closed out the scoring in the 73rd to seal the Coogs’ victory.

In the clash between the Lady Sabercats and Lady Eagles, the feline squad notched their first “W” of the season with a 5-1 win.

The game-winning goals were scored by Carolina Cortéz (4’), Victoria Salas (11’ y 42’), Summer Van Hook (17’), and Mary Molina (77’). The Lady Eagles’ lone goal was scored by Angelica Briones in the 79th minute.

After five weeks of play, the Lady Rattlers duo of Daniela Cantu and Lizette Niño are the leading goal scorers of the Fall League season with eight tallies a piece.

The second half of the STXPSA Girls Fall League Season will begin with Week 6 on Oct. 20 with the following matches: Lady Rattlers-Lady Cougars, 9 a.m.; Lady Bulldogs-Lady Sabercats, 10:45 a.m.; Lady Eagles-Lady Warriors, 12:30 p.m.
