McALLEN, 14 Oct. - The South Texas College Copa Jaguar 7-on-7 Soccer Tournament couldn’t have been scripted any better when Jaguares edged out Indios 3-1 in penalty kicks to lift the inaugural competition's trophy Saturday at the Pecan Campus Athletic Fields.
Edinburg-based Jaguares, no relation to the tournament of the same name, and Indios played to a scoreless draw for 40 minutes in the championship match before being obligated to resolve the contest in a three-round penalty kick shootout.
Joel Luna, Marcos Perales, and Omar Rosas converted each of their attempts, while Indios hit the post in the first round and Jonathan Palomo converted in the second round. However, the missed first shot came back to haunt Indios when the Jags went 3-for-3 to win the penalty kick roulette.
The Jags finished pool play as the Group 2 winner with a 2-1-0 record for seven points. Panteritas of Weslaco wrapped up the first round of play with an identical record, but placed second due to goal differential.
Indios won Group 1 with a 1-2-0 mark for five points, the same amount as Mission-based Águilas and Edinburg United. While Indios won the group by goal differential, Águilas advanced because they scored more goals than Edinburg United in the second tie-breaker.
In the semifinals, Indios defeated Panteritas 3-0 in an All Mid-Valley matchup and Jaguares beat Águilas 4-1 to advance the championship match.
Águilas defeated Panteritas 1-0 in the Third Place match on a goal by Alán Ramírez.
