CORPUS CHRISTI, 12 Apr. - Valley View defeated Victoria East 1-0 Tuesday at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi in the Region IV-4A quarterfinals to advance to the Regional semifinals for the second consecutive season.

District 63-4A leading goal scorer José Ángel "Torito" Soto tallied the only goal of the match in the opening minutes, which proved to be the game winner, to send the Tigers into the semifinals.

"We must’ve had about 26 shots on goal and only scored one," said second-year Valley View head coach Damián Magallán. "After the goal, they pulled everybody back. We were on top of them, but couldn’t get through. But we only needed the one goal to win, and now we have to focus on the semifinals."

Valley View will face Vandegrift in the semifinals on April 13 in the second boys match of the Region IV-4A Tournament at Cabaniss Soccer Field in Corpus Christi at 6:30 p.m. Vandegrift ousted defending 2011 4A state champion Boerne Champion 3-1 in the quarterfinals.

Last season, the Tigers stopped two games short of qualifying to the state tournament when they were eliminated by Fredericksburg in the Regional semifinals.

"We’ve prepared for this all season," concluded Magallán. "The players that returned from last year wanted another chance to make it to state, and now they have it. It’s up to them to see how much they want it."

In the other semifinal, La Joya Juárez-Lincoln will face Alamo Heights in the opening match of Regional Tournament on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Juárez-Lincoln routed Floresville 4-1 and Alamo Heights slipped past Hendrickson 2-1 in shootouts in the quarterfinals.
