EDINBURG, 22 March. - PSJA North stopped Edinburg Economedes dead in their tracks on Tuesday with a 1-0 victory in overtime to put an end to the Jaguars’ 12-game winning streak in District 31-5A play, and secure their first trip to the playoffs since 2005.
Aldo Beltrán scored the game-winning goal for the Raiders in overtime to give PSJA North their first playoff berth in seven years.
PSJA North improved to 9-4 with 27 points with their triumph over the Jaguars in an intense and physical match. Economedes dropped to 12-1 for 35 points with the loss to the Raiders.
Among the Raiders’ achievements this season is the PSJA Tri-City Championship, which PSJA North won with two games remaining in the Tri-City series.
The Raiders last advanced to the postseason seven years ago. PSJA North was eliminated by Brownsville Rivera 6-1 in the opening bi-district round of the 2005 playoffs.
This year, the Raiders’ path will not be any easier. District 31-5A still goes head-to-head with 32-5A, one of the toughest district’s in the state, in the opening rounds of the playoffs. PSJA North will have to face a Brownsville squad in the first round.
