BOERNE, 22 Jan. - They came, they saw, and they conquered.
Brownsville Porter survived a tough bracket and defeated tournament host Boerne Champion 3-0 in the final of the Boerne Tournament on Saturday,
Striker Alán Cortinas scored a pair of goals and Jorge Ariceaga added another to give the Cowboys the tournament championship.
Porter won three out of their four matches at the competition that featured full-length 80-minute matches. In high school, games are limited to 80 minutes as opposed to the 90 minutes that are allowed at the college and professional level.
The Cowboys’ road to the championship got off to a rocky start when Porter edged out San Antonio Clark 1-0 in shootouts after playing to a 3-3 draw in regulation time. Cortinas notched two goals while Francisco Morales tallied the other score.
In the second match, Porter was tripped up by Austin St. Stephen’s 2-1. Cortinas scored the Cowboys’ only goal of the game.
Porter turned it around with a 6-0 rout of San Antonio Lee on Friday. The Cowboys’ cause was aided once again by Cortinas, who found the back of the net twice, and by tallies from Rodrigo Juárez, Joel Garza, Fernando Capistrán, and Manuel Corral.
The Cowboys’ striker Cortinas finished the tournament with seven goals.
