BROWNSVILLE, 15 Jan. - For the third time in as many months, coach Américo Cortéz has guided one of his teams to a championship title. His latest success was guiding the Economedes B side to the Cats Tournament title on Saturday.

Economedes B outlasted Donna in the final to defeat the Redskins 2-1 in penalty kicks after playing to a scoreless tie in regulation time.

Cortéz, who is Economedes’ assistant coach, also won the Edinburg CISD Middle School Tournament in November with Memorial Middle School and became the two-time Edinburg District champion with Memorial in December.

The young Jaguars’ victory also marked the first time since 2007 that an Edinburg team has won their own tournament. In 2007, Economedes defeated Laredo United 2-0 in the final.

Economedes B overcame the odds and qualified to the second round of the 11th Annual Edinburg CISD Cats Tournament with a 2-2-0 (wins, ties, losses) record for 25 points, good enough to take second place behind Group B winner Donna (3-1-0, 30 pts.).

The Jags edged out Mission Veterans Memorial 1-0 in the quarterfinals and downed McAllen Memorial in penalty kicks to advance to the title game.

In the quarterfinals, Donna defeated Edinburg 1-0 and slipped past McAllen Memorial in the PK series. The Redskins and Mustangs tied 1-1 in regulation time of the semifinals.
