McALLEN, 26 Dec. - The McAllen Chapter of the Rio Grande Valley Texas Association of Sports Officials continued its preparation this month for the upcoming 2012 high school and middle school soccer season by participating in the association’s annual physical evaluation and written exam.

The McAllen Chapter held the physical evaluations at Edinburg Municipal Park on Dec. 7 to gauge the physical fitness levels of the chapter’s contingent of soccer officials for the 2012 season that kicks off with scrimmages during the last week of December.

The physical evaluation consisted of running one mile and sprints. The evaluation was timed.

One week later, on Dec. 14, the chapter’s referees took a written exam at the new McAllen Library that tested their knowledge on the rules of the game.

"This is something we take seriously, and we do it each year to assure the highest level of professionalism and officiating possible," said newly elected McAllen Chapter President Israel Lara.

"We are looking forward to an exciting season of soccer as well as for the chapter," Lara added. "We have implemented some changes within the association that we hope will not only benefit our referees, but the coaches, athletic directors, players, parents, and fans."

Although the evaluations and exams were completed last week, the McAllen Chapter is still accepting new members for the 2012 season. The chapter covers the Upper Rio Grande Valley from Rio Grande City to Donna. A soccer official is a paid position on a game-by-game basis.

Potential members do not require previous referee experience in soccer although a general knowledge of the sport is helpful. New members must be 16 years of age or older.

The cost for new memberships is $130. Fees include a rule book, TASO patch and training.
