McALLEN, 7 Nov. - After fighting to a scoreless draw in regulation time, PSJA North defeated Mission 5-4 in penalty kicks of a preseason tournament championship match played on Saturday.
Orlando Chapa, Jesús Almaráz, Ángel Miranda, Francisco “Pako” López and Milton García scored the five pk’s, while Raiders goalkeeper José “Pepe” Treviño stopped the fifth shot by Mission to give PSJA North the victory and the tournament title.
In the semifinals, the Raiders played to a scoreless tie at the end of regulation against Donna to force the game to be decided in pk’s.
After Chapa failed to convert on PSJA North’s first attempt, the subsequent four Raiders succeeded in putting the ball into the back of the net. Almaráz, Miranda, López and García converted their shots to draw 4-4 with Donna at the end of the five-shot pk series.
Eulices Escudero scored the game-winning pk for the Raiders in sudden death and Treviño stopped Donna’s sixth attempt to put PSJA North in the championship final against Mission.
In the group stage, the Raiders defeated Rowe 3-0 and Valley View 2-1 before falling to La Joya Palmview 1-0. However, it was PSJA North’s win over the Tigers that put the Tri-City squad into the semifinals.
