España rallies for draw with Indios

La Joya remains undefeated, downs Mission

PHARR, 11 July. - After breaking a 1-all tie in the second half, Indios looked like it was going to cruise to a 3-1 victory. Instead, they were shocked when España rallied with a pair of unanswered goals for a 3-3 draw at Donna on Saturday in the fifth week of the South Texas Premier Soccer Association’s Summer League.

Juan Cruz, Ricky Vargas and Israel Osuna staked Indios to a 3-1 lead, but a pair of tallies by Luis Guerra and another by Israel Flores saved España from losing three points.

Despite the recovery by España (2-1-2, 7 points), Indios remained one of only two undefeated teams left in the Summer League.

In the Game of the Week, Edgar García notched his third goal of the season to lift La Joya over Mission 1-0 at San Juan’s Municipal Park. García scored the game-winning goal in the 16th minute of play and moved into a two-way tie for second place in the league’s goal scoring category.

The victory kept La Joya (3-1-0) undefeated with 10 points and tied for second place with the Tigers (3-1-1), who claimed a 2-0 win over Edcouch.

One of the first games of the day proved to be entertaining when Gatos Negros and Potros fought to a 2-2 draw at Donna.

Edgar Salas and Mauro Martínez scored for Potros, while Héctor Martínez and José Cruzes tallied for Gatos Negros in the 2-all draw.

The tie was the first point of the season for Potros (0-1-3), who look to turn their record around in the second half of the Summer League.

Prior to the start of the final match of the day between the Rattlers and Hormigas, a minute of silence was observed in memory the Rattlers’ assistant coach Rodrigo Leal, who died during the week.

The game got underway with a lot of promise when both sides got on the board early on. However, the Hormigas’ goalkeeper Marco Peña was ejected in the first half, which opened the floodgates to an overwhelming 10-2 victory by the Rattlers.

Daniel García scored three goals, Julio Gutiérrez added a pair of tallies and Luis Gómez notched his fourth of the season for the Rattlers. Also tallying goals were Javier Gutiérrez, Gerra Garza, Ricky Peña and Irving Yáñez.

Héctor Arredondo and Chrisitan Abrego scored for the Hormigas, who played most of the game with only 10 men and a position player in goal after the ejection of Peña.

The Rattlers (4-0-1, 12) maintained first place in the Summer League with a two-point lead over second place Tigers and La Joya.

In the goal scoring category, the Rattlers’ Luis Gómez and Daniel García are the league leaders with four tallies each.
