McALLEN, 2 April. - A pair of tallies by Dani Flores and a key save by goalkeeper Kaley Vanness gave the McAllen Lady Bulldogs a 2-1 victory over the Harlingen Lady Cardinals on Friday in the 5A Area playoffs.
Flores scored in the 52nd minute and notched the game winner in the first overtime for the Lady Bulldogs, while Tori Vargas equalized for the Lady Cardinals in the 81st of minute of regulation time.
McAllen went ahead 1-0 when Flores received a pass from midfielder Carla Sánchez and put it into the back of the Harlingen net.
Vargas struck with nine minutes remaining in the match. She dribbled past two defenders and beat Vanness to tie up the score.
The Lady Cardinals had a golden opportunity to win the game when they were awarded a penalty kick with three minutes left to play. However, April Compeán’s attempt was stopped by McAllen’s Vanness, who kept the Lady Bulldogs’ hopes alive.
In the first overtime, Flores received a similar pass that flew over the defense that she drove close enough to take a shot on goal that beat the Harlingen keeper and gave McAllen a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs held on in the second overtime and kept the Lady Cardinals scoreless to win the match 2-1 and advance to the Regionals.
